Self Portrait/Photobooks - Project #4

Self Portrait/Photobooks - Project #4

Research

I found some artists for Project #4 that I plan on using as inspirations for my photoshop work of editing my self portrait ID image.

The first photographer/artist I found goes by the name of Bruce Cratsley. I was particularly intrigued by his self portrait photo series, For Whom the Bell's Told (1984-1985), which are a series of colour polaroid's of Cratsley, titled after the Hemingway novel.

I was intrigued by this series of Cratsley's because of the deepness and mysterious vibe his photos give off but that may be because they're monochromatic. I think it's also intriguing that he chose himself as the subject which relates to the project we're doing.

Another photographer/artist I found interesting is Laurence Demaison. In her collection, Entomologies - 2024, she takes self portraits of herself and turns them into a bigger, readable image. They're very melancholic and feel serious.

Another artist I found particularly interesting is Jim Shaw. He paints distorted faces and portraits with oils paint and even has a whole series called, Distorted Face (1978 - 2007). In this long running series of his, he often paints depictions of popular figures like Ronald Reagan, JFK, Clint Eastwood and many more. His work is purposely supposed to have a dark, sadistic feeling to it which is why I find it intriguing.
